Hear clearly, stay connected

Whether you are at a busy restaurant or festive celebration, today’s smart hearing aids adapt to your surroundings in real-time so you can be part of every moment.
The festive season was always a time of togetherness for Mr Lim Chee Hock, but over the years, it had become a quiet struggle.
“I loved the celebrations,” says the retired teacher who is in his 70s. “But when conversations got lively, I often felt left out. I could hear voices, but the words were lost.”
For nearly a decade, Mr Lim lived with gradual hearing loss. “Even during one-on-one conversations in noisy places, I often missed parts of what people were saying, which made me feel left out,” he says. “I started avoiding gatherings because it was discouraging to keep up.”
The turning point came when he realised how much he was missing out on with his grandchildren. “I knew I needed to do something to reconnect and not miss these precious moments.”
Smart tech enhances hearing
A friend recommended Mr Lim to 20dB Hearing Singapore earlier this year. The hearing care provider offers a range of services, such as hearing assessments, personalised fittings, cochlear implants and tinnitus management.
He says: “The audiologist took time to understand my hearing challenges during the assessment and explained the whole process clearly.”
Early hearing intervention can make a lasting difference, explains Ms Cheryl Wong, Mr Lim’s audiologist at 20dB Hearing. “Untreated hearing loss can affect not just your hearing, but also your brain, emotional, well-being and lifestyle. Early intervention keeps the auditory system active, helping to preserve cognitive function, mental health and social connection. It’s an investment in quality of life,” she says.
Mr Lim was fitted with one of 20dB Hearing’s latest smart hearing aids. Lightweight and discreet, they use technology powered by artificial intelligence to automatically adapt to different sound environments — whether the user is in a noisy cafe or a quiet park — enhancing speech and reducing background noise without manual adjustments.
“Some of these devices also have a built-in limiter that works like a shock absorber, softening sudden sounds like doors slamming or dishes clattering before they reach your ear,” explains Ms Wong.
Mr Lim’s hearing aid also has Bluetooth connectivity, which connects him easily to his mobile phone and speakers.
Although it took some time for him to adjust to wearing them, ongoing support from his audiologist helped smooth the process.
At 20dB Hearing, follow-up care includes fine-tuning, maintenance and long-term hearing health monitoring.
Ms Rachel Lim, Mr Lim’s daughter, noticed the change. “Before my father got hearing aids, we had to repeat ourselves constantly. Now, we share stories and jokes without missing a beat.”
For Mr Lim, the improvement has been life-changing. “Hearing my grandchildren laugh and being able to respond in that moment has made me realise how much I have regained,” he says. “Getting hearing aids has given me back the joy of being part of everything.”
